March 1870 Anton Franz Mörtel founded the chalk factory, which is still owned exclusively by members of the Mörtel family. The trade mark DREI STERNE was registered at the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin as early as 28th February, 1898.

After the founder´s death his son Matthäus acquired the premises in Nürnberg and developed the company further. In the twenties AntonFranz Moertel KG introduced the stonefree and dustless chalk, which increased the quality enormously. After the destruction of the facilities in Nürnberg at the end of World War II the company was rebuilt in Schwabach by Rosa Mörtel.   

I  n the sixties the importance of the industrial marking crayons increased rapidly and the company could expand its product range with a variety of new quality products. In 1982 Rosa Mörtel handed down to her son Rudolf and her grandsons Peter and Manfred a respectable firm with a secured market position. At present the company is run by them as limited partnership in the fifth generation. 140 years of tradition guarantee German quality and reliability.
